Updating Jekyll from iPad with Prose.io

So I setup this Jekyll blog a few months ago and as usual after getting it going I promptly let it languish. One of the issues I guess is that unlike Wordpress there is no quick iOS or web app out of the box to update Jekyll sites from my phone or iPad. Enter Prose.io. Prose.io is an elegant and clean web app for managing Github sites and CMS Free web sites which also works very nicely on iPads (no app required).

RSS Struggles

As is often the case when learning something new I have run into a problem and the fix for it is alluding me at the moment. In this case it is RSS feeds in Jekyll. The [Minimal Mistakes[(https://mmistakes.github.io/minimal-mistakes)] theme already had jekyll-feed gem installed which appeared to be working but when I checked my feed in Feedly I could only see posts that were previously posted on my Wordpress blog and none of the new test posts on Jekyll were showing up.

Minimal Mistakes Blogs

Now I have got a barebones Jekyll site running, DNS sorted and old Wordpress posts migrated its time to do a bit of personalisation. Like a lot of Jekyll blogs I have started with the Minimal Mistakes theme which is a nice starting point. As a non-expert in the field of web development I know what I want to do and roughly how to achieve it but working out the detail of how to make the changes I need, especially where the theme is a remote Jekyl theme, is a challenge.

Jekyll Go Live Day

UKMac.net is now live on Github Pages ! If you are lucky enough to be reading this post today (21st July 2020) then you may have received warnings that the page is not secure from your browser. This should clear itself within the next 24 hours as Github Pages sets up https on my custom domain. My current Wordpress site hosting renewal was due in August so this seemed a sensible time to move the blog over and save myself some money.

Moving to Jekyll!

After many years of on and off dabbling with Wordpress blogs I have decided to make the move to Jekyll and Github Pages for hosting. Jekyll is very different to Wordpress and requires a completely different skill set to implement. It is easy enough to pickup if you have a good understanding of IT but probably not a simple job if you don’t… Typically I spend more time playing with setting up blogs than I do actually blogging.
