When Apple released iOS 4.2 in November 2010 the Find My iPhone feature that was previously limited to MobileMe subscribers was added as a free service to iPhone 4 and 4th Generation iPod Touch owners. To access the service and locate your device an iPhone app was also released or alternatively you could go to http://me.com and login there to view your device in a web browser. These applications use a public API which has now been used by Tyler Hall to create Sosumi, a Mac application that does most of what the iPhone app and me.com website do, with the exceptions being that it does not provide Remote Wipe or Remote Lock functions.

Sosumi does have a couple of benefits over the Apple offerings however, firstly you don’t have to keep logging into it unlike both the iPhone app and the me.com website which require you to login each time you open them. Secondly Sosumi displays the current battery level of your device as well as whether it is currently on charge or not. This could be fairly useful information if you were unfortunate enough to lose your phone and wanted to track it down using this app, as it would give you some idea of how long you had before potentially losing contact with it if the battery were to die.

Sosumi is a tiny 800Kb download and is currently free from http://clickontyler.com/sosumi. If you have an iPhone and have registered with Find My iPhone ( and if you haven’t then why haven’t you ? ) Sosumi is a recommended way of keeping tabs on your phone/iPod.

Note : Sosumi is the name of one of the system sounds from Macintosh System 7 Operating System and is a play on the words “so sue me” aimed at Apple Corp, the owner of the Beatles music rights.

Now, don’t get me wrong I am not a cat hater, I have two siamese cats, but something about reading this book, which had a picture on each page showing some strange sick use for a dead cat hit my funny bone. In isolation each joke was mildly funny, but read page after page the effect was cumulative leaving you rolling about in stitches…

Anyway, getting to the point, Damn You Auto Correct ! is a web site that had much the same effect when I found it a couple of nights ago. Someone on Twitter posted this link to a compilation of the best posts from January. The posts are comprised of screen shots submitted by users of their iPhone text conversations where the iPhones attempts to auto correct their messages have come out not quite how the sender intended…. Suffice to say many are of an adult theme so you have been warned….

There appears to be an issue with the latest version of the iPhone software ( 4.2.1 ) that is affecting a number of people including myself. Since the update I had noticed a strange delay when opening folders that wasn’t there before. When tapping on a folder there would be a delay of a couple of seconds before the screen scrolled down to show the apps in the folder. Very frustrating when you are trying to quickly open an app.

This thread on the Apple discussion site has a number of suggested fixes. The one that appears to have worked for me is a quick hard reset of the iPhone but others report that the only solution was to reduce te number of items in each of their folders to less than 8 apps.

Have you seen this problem on your iOS device since the update ? What was your solution ? Have you been unable to resolve the problem ?

It appears that a change in the policy have meant users whose passwords no longer meet the complexity requirements ( 8 characters with one number and one upper/lower case character ) were unable to able access to Find My iPhone.

To correct the problem and enable access all you have to do is go to the iTunes store, and create a new stronger password. Open iTunes and click on the iTunes Store, then click on your Apple ID ( at the top right of the iTunes window ).Your Apple account information should be displayed, click on the Edit button next to your Apple ID then on the following screen create a new password and click Done. You should find that once you have done this you can now login to the Find My iPhone service ( either the iPhone app or through the http://www.me.com site )

Launched today on the App Store is a new VoIP ( Voice Over IP ) app for the iPhone called Viber that looks set to become a big hit. FIrst of all, and perhaps most importantly for an app in this market space, it is FREE. Second it offers the possibility of FREE phone calls between iPhones ( at present but a Blackberry and Android offering are in the pipeline ) using either WiFi or your 3G connection. Thirdly, it works in the background WITHOUT eating your battery in a few hours and fourthly it uses your existing phone number and address book so no need to register a new username/account.

For most people the killer for Skype is that running in the background to allow incoming calls to reach you severely reduces the battery life of your iPhone. Viber tackles this by using an alternative approach, sending notifications of incoming calls using the iPhones push notification service. When you receive a call and the app is not running in the background you will get a notification message which will open the app and connect the incoming call.

Outgoing calls from Viber to friends who do not have the app installed ( or to landlines ) are allowed but unlike Skype the app does not have a charging mechanism it simply routes the call through the standard Phone App ( obviously incurring normal outgoing call charges ), but this does mean the app could potentially replace the built in phone app. In use the app looks virtually identical to the Phone app the only give away being the purple tinge menu bar and the fact that contacts who have the app installed appear with a small purple Viber logo next to them.

Registering to use the service is a simple matter of installing the app and entering your iPhone number. The service then sends you a text with a code in a notification message which you enter to verify the account and you are setup ! Simplicity itself, no email address/user account required. It uses your iPhone number.

In the brief testing that I have carried out so far the call quality appears to be excellent with only a brief stuttering ( I was on 3G in car hands free of course ). Obviously it is early days and it remains to be seen whether the service catches on but as they seem to have addressed many of the show stopper issues with other VoIP apps that I have seen so far it does look like one to watch.

Worth a download.

With each release of iPhone and iOS there are always a range of reports of battery life improvements and inevitably on the reverse side of the coin battery life worsening. Ever since the dawn of iPhone apps there has been a potential for rogue applications to reduce battery life ( Skype…. ) a situation made potentially worse with the introduction of multi tasking. It has to be said though that the way in which Apple controls and approves the introduction of new apps combined with the limited extent to which apps can continue to consume resources in the background has meant that typical battery life has not been heavily affected.

This makes the situation I was involved in yesterday with my sisters iPhone 4 all the more surprising. Basically I received a call from her for advice on why her iPhone should suddenly have started losing charge at an alarming rate ( literally 1% every 10 minutes or so ). After the usual approach of restarting, removing recently installed apps and forcing running apps to close had produced no improvement it was time to turn to Google. A short while later it became clear that one potential cause was of all things Game Center. A number of users reported that since joining Game Center they had seen battery life drop off dramatically. My sister had been running Game Center for a while without problems but this seemed worth a try so last night she switched off Game Center before going to bed. Next morning low and behold no dramatic drop in battery charge !

Obviously this seems to have fixed her issue. Have you seen Game Center killing your iPhone battery ? If so please drop a line here, we would love to hear your experience.

A number of sites are reporting that MacRumors have discovered evidence in the latest build of iOS 4.2 that suggests Apples paid for MobileMe service may at last be going free, or at least elements of it.

The code snippets include error messages such as “The maximum number of free accounts have been activated on this iPhone”, but further errors state “This Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services” which suggests that Mail may not be included in the free part of the service.

Apple originally stated that iOS 4.2 would be launched in November although rumoured launch dates earlier this month have already come and gone as Apple issued further Gold Masters to Developers for testing.

Apple have today released minor updates for iPhone iOS 4 ( 4.0.1 ) and iPad ( 3.2.1 ). The iPhone update introduces slightly amended signal strength algorithm and display though not any apparent fix for the ongoing antenna issue on iPhone 4′s.

The iPad update fixes a number of issues including improved WiFi connectivity and improved reliability of the video out connector in the iPad dock to VGA adapter.

Neither update is likely to set the world on fire especially when iPhone 4 owners are awaiting confirmation of a fix for the antenna issue ( if in fact there is one ) and iPad owners are chomping at the bit for iOS 4.
