Apples Next Big Thing

After watching this weeks Keynote I for one was left wondering what Apple have left up their sleeves ? For years the imminent Apple Tablet was the Next Big Thing that Mac fans and industry pundits could share rumours and opinions on. It single handedly kept a whole industry busy… Then of course along came the iPad and the wind was taken out of everyones sails.

What’s next ? The keynote this week was yet another reworking of the iPod range ( iPod Nano goes “fat” again, iPod Shuffle gets buttons back, iPod Touch has incremental upgrade, iTunes goes gray and adds a social network ) and left most followers feeling a little underwhelmed. The Apple TV announcement had the greatest potential to offer something major, especially if rumours of the new iteration running on iOS had come true, but again the upgrade appears to be only a small step forward especially for consumers outside the US.

Sure, Apple continues to sell boat loads of everything they do and no one can deny that the rest of the industry are still struggling to catchup with the lead they have in online music, tablet computers, laptops, high end all in one desktops but apart from incremental upgrades to their current product line what new undefined market do they have left to work their magic on ?

As a user of Apple computers I personally hope at they are beavering away on a major upgrade to OS X as the last upgrade here was again not exactly ground breaking. I have followed Apple for years and every Keynote I secretly wish that Steve would step forward with a truly unique “And One More Thing”, one that NO ONE had foreseen. I guess I may just have to live in hope ?
