Safari 3.1 is SO Fast !

As you may have already noticed Safari 3.1 is now available and as predicted it is a screamer ! Load times are instant on my 2.4Ghz Intel iMac, the icon does not bounce once on the Dock, the app just appears the moment you launch it. Page loads seem very quick as well but the thing that is instantly noticeable is the startup time.

I was virtually on the point of starting to use Firefox Beta 3 until I saw this… Looks like Apple pulled one out of the bag again. To be fair though, Firefox is almost as quick loading, although the first load is much slower than Safari. Interestingly both browsers now do a perfect job of rendering the Acid2 test. Does anyone know what the beta of IE 8 makes of the Acid2 test ?

Warning – Be Aware…

Generally, I hate the warnings that get sent around but I have to admit that this one is serious.

Please protect everyone you know by circulating this warning widely.

If someone comes to your door and says they are conducting a survey and asks you to show them your bum, do NOT show them your bum – it is a scam ! They only want to see your bum.

5 Free Ways To Control Your Kids Access To The Internet

There was a time not too long ago when controlling what your kids got up to on the Internet was easy. There was one family computer linked to the Internet by a slow dialup connection and it was probably located in a communal room, so your teenage son didn’t get much opportunity of surfing the seedier side of the Internet ( at least not when the rest of the family was around ! ).

How times have changed. Now broadband Internet connections, WiFi networks have opened up web access to a huge range of devices from mobile phones through to games consoles and laptops, any of which has the potential to be used for nefarious purposes. Fortunately there are a number of ways in which the average home user can fairly easily block or at least monitor their family use of the Internet, this article will discuss a few of the FREE options that you might want to consider.

BBC iPlayer Comes To iPhone and iPod Touch

The BBC have today launched availability of iPlayer content on iPhone and iPod Touch, making the Apple hardware the first mobile devices to support the streaming TV service. The content is encoded as a 516Kbps stream so it will only play via WiFi on both devices as the EDGE connection of the iPhone is not fast enough to operate effectively.

The Web site access has not been optimised for the iPhone interface so to actually select the programme you require involves a fair amount of zooming and panning of the page. Hopefully this is a short term thing and the Beeb will improve the front end for easier navigation. What I can say though is that the video actually looks superb on with not stuttering or pixellation what so ever.

Mimbo Wordpress Theme And CSSEdit

Mimbo is one of the latest hot magazine-style themes for Wordpress that is getting a lot of coverage. Like the Morning After style used on this site Mimbo has configurable article images and sections and has a clean stylish look.

I have taken the opportunity to evaluate Mimbo over on my other site, Muxton.com, which has been languishing in a state of disrepair for some months now and I have to say I am very keen to re-launch it now and begin actively updating again.
