Apple Launches Web Apps Directory For iPhone And Touch

Apple have officially launched a new Web Applications Directory for iPhone and iPod Touch’s. The Directory has a categorised list of custom applications that can be accessed by WiFi as well as by the cellular ( EDGE ) connection on the iPhone. Categories include Games, Social Networking, Utilities, Search amongst others.

Until now there have been a variety of sites that have collected together links to iPhone friendly web sites but none have contained as many quality applications as Apples library does. These web applications to all intents and purposes appear to be custom applications, indeed some even continue to work even when the iPhone/iPod no longer has a wifi connection.

It appears that web applications are about to break through to compete directly with local applications not only on PC’s/Macs but now on handheld devices. With technologies such as Google Gears developing methods to allow online and offline working the distinction between what is networked and what is not if really becoming blurred.

Is now finally the age of the network computer ?
