Replace Transparent Menu Bar in Leopard with Opaque One
A number of sites have already reported how to fudge your desktop wallpaper to make the new transparent menu bar in OS X Leopard appear to be opaque by creating a 20 pixel high white strip across the width of the image. Eternal Storms Software have made this step a little simpler by releasing OpaqueMenuBar and app designed to do this automatically for you. It is a free download. If the new menu bar bothers you check it out.
Leopard and Logitech Mouse Driver – Avoid Like The Plague
Logitech Driver Kills Leopards
Anyone like myself who has either upgraded or is about to upgrade to Leopard who also uses a Logitech Mouse should be aware that there appears to be significant issues with the software provided by Logitech. The Logitech Control Center software seems to be the cause of system hangs being experienced by a number of users including myself.
Another New UK Mac Podcast
Just heard on the excellent podcast BritishMac.com a recommendation from Will Green for a new UK based podcast about Mac called http://www.macbites.co.uk. I have downloaded the latest Episode and am listening as I type. Basically three Mac “switchers” discussing hints/tips and news.
New Quartz Effects For iChat In Leopard Already Appearing
Out of the box Leopard provides a few neat effects that use the new Alpha channel capabilities of iChat and PhotoBooth to put you in front of the Eiffel Tower or on a Roller Coaster, but it also provides an open mechanism for adding your own effects. Only 3 days after the release a number of clever alternative effects are already circulating on Mac Forums and a few of these are listed below for your pleasure.
Top 6 Features of Leopard That You Might Not Have Noticed ( yet ).
Much has been made of the new features of Leopard and countless pages have already been posted with in depth analysis of Time Machine, Spaces, the 3D Dock. What you may not have spotted is an article covering some of the not so obvious new additions to Leopard. From my use over the last couple of days these are the ones I have come across so far.
1. Spotlight Now Performs As Well As Dedicated Application Launchers
Leopard Installed
So its finally Leopard day and I am up and running with the latest big cat from Cupertino. First impressions are very good and so far I am in general agreement with the reviews published today. Performance seems subjectively better than Tiger, but that could be down to the clean install. The new UI is nice, although I am generally disappointed with the folder icons in Finder which seem a little bland and uninteresting. I guess I can always replace with my preferred icon set in the future if it bothers me to much.
Coverflow in the Finder and Quicklook are very impressive and will certainly be useful tools, Spaces is slick and easy to use, I havent got to Time Machine yet thought this is one of the features I am most interested in, hopefully I will get an external drive hooked up and configured later this evening.
Leopard Installing Now…
Leopard install has about 7 minutes to go on my MacBook… More later when I have had chance to play (erm… evaluate… )
Will Leopard Land On 26th ?
Looking at the Apple Store it appears that Leopard may well not be landing on door steps this Friday. As of 6pm on 24th my copy of Leopard is still showing as Not Yet Shipping and an estimated Shipping date of 26th. So it looks like delivery is likely to be early next week ( 28th-29th ? )
Has anyone seen their order status change to Shipped ? It will be interesting to see whether there will be a lot of disappointed Mac fans this weekend.
MacRumors Report – Leopard in the wild
Macrumors.com has an unconfirmed report of someone who has apparently got hold of final release version of Leopard and has installed and reviewed. Interestingly many of the comments refer to “blazing speed” which is a good to know! It is certainly interesting to note that most versions of OS X actually improve on the performance of the previous version, unlike Windows which consistently runs slower and requires more power to acheive the same levels of performance.
3 Days to Go
Only 3 more days until Leopard released… Time to start creating those backups ready for the weekend…
