First Thoughts On iPod Touch
Those of you that know me will probably also know that I collected my new iPod Touch yesterday morning. What you will not know is what I have discovered so far about my latest gadget.
I think it is fairly clear from the reviews elsewhere on the net that I was going to be impressed by the new iPod Touch. The reality however was much more than even I expected.
No matter what your thoughts on Apple or Mr Jobs when you first get your hands on a Touch for even the briefest of “flicks” around its stunning User Interface it is virtually impossible not to be amazed by the slickness of this piece of technology. Using the Touch in person is just a revelation. From the very first feel of it to the first moment you slide through the touch screen menus it just oozes class.
Last night I had the opportunity to demo it to my next door neighbour, a self confessed technophobe who has not even sent an email. The look on his face as I showed him the Photo library, scrolling through the images with a dab of the finger on the screen, was an absolute picture. He was literally speechless. For a moment he sat looking at the screen, then just said “Its just like Science Fiction”.
Then again this morning I took the opportunity to spend 10 minutes quiet time with my three year old daughter by showing her some snaps of herself as a baby. Within two minutes she was navigating through the photos, stretching and squeezing the images and scrolling them around the screen, all without me teaching her anything ! I would like to think this was because Emily is a prodigy of some sort, but I think I know the reason is more because the user interface is just stunningly well designed and completely obvious to anyone who sees it.
From a technical point of view it is also very hard not to be impressed. The responsiveness of a device as small as this is pretty remarkable. Every option selected appears instantly, scrolling through cover art is as smooth and stutter free as on my desktop iMac, rotating the screen re-generates the on screen image in the correct aspect ratio without hesitation. Everything just feels like there must a hugely powerful processor inside this tiny device, which of course there can’t be.
Recent reports have hinted that the next product for Apples portfolio is likely to be a larger tablet or slate format PDA/notebook computer using all the technology developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch. If this doesn’t happen I would be extremely shocked. Apple have a clear lead in the touch screen market now and they would be foolish indeed if they did not capitalise on this. I suppose the only issue is what market place they will target for this solution ? Apple have made no secret about not being particularly interested in taking on Microsoft in the corporate sector so it seems unlikely that they would target the Windows Tablet PC as a direct competitor in the first instance. More likely I think would be to hit where they typically have strongholds in their niche markets such as design and possibly education.
Whatever happens I think this is the start of an exciting new era in PC hardware and software design.
First post from iPod Touch
Posted by Scott in Apple, iPod/iTunes on September 30, 2007
This is my first post to this blog from an iPod Touch. Amazingly the keyboard is remarkably usable. Apple have taken a few obvious tweaks from Blackberry such as auto-capitalising the first letter in a new sentence and adding a full stop when you enter two spaces at the end of a sentence.
The speed in which I have entered this post is pretty amazing really especially as I have only been playing with this for a few minutes.
iPod Touch’s Are In Transit
Posted by Scott in Apple, iPod/iTunes on September 25, 2007
Only a few days ago Apple unexpectedly changed the estimated delivery date of most UK iPod Touch pre-orders to 4th-5th October after initially declaring 1st-2nd October. Now today it appear they must have got a little ahead of themselves as the status of my order and one or two others that I am aware of has suddenly changed again to “In Transit” with an estimated delivery of 28th September. Thats this Friday folks !

A Mac Bloggers View Of The World
One of the biggest difficulties faced by bloggers who decide to target Apple or Apple products such as the Mac and iPods must be defining themselves against the array of fantastic Mac oriented sites available. Every niche and topic appears to be covered and whatever style you can think of has already been used. Added to this there is the problem of finding the time to actually write about your chosen subject when the distraction of all the other good stuff on the net seems to pull you away from writing and into surfing. There are so many good sites chock full of interesting apps and widgets that it is easy to spend all your time downloading and trying out the latest new products.
Since moving to Mac about 4 years ago I have been consistently amazed at the diversity and quality of the applications available for OS X. Even the most basic application is typically slick, glossy and presented in a fashion that even the most high end Windows applications rarely match. Take Skitch as an example, this screen grabber utility for OS X is so slickly presented and is so easy to use it actually makes you want to find an excuse to capture your desktop apps and annotate them. This is a theme common amongst OS X applications, amazing ease of use and consistency that make using them a pleasure and not a chore or a complex re-learning exercise as is so often the case with Windows apps.
Dual Monitor Support Arrives For Parallels
Having been a Parallels For Mac user since the early Beta releases one of the things that I have learned to live with has been the lack of support for a second monitor when switching into Coherence mode. When this new feature was first launched I was pretty disappointed to discover that Windows apps could only exist on the primary monitor and could not be dragged across onto a second one. At that time I did do a bit of digging around on the Parallels forums and found a number of users who were complaining about this same omission. Since then to be honest I have not checked back to see if this feature was still on the to be released list, and in fact when I downloaded build 5160 a couple of days ago I did actually try dragging a window across onto my other monitor and sure enough it still didn’t work. Then today, whilst looking at the VM settings for my Windows XP I realised that the feature was there but not enabled in my settings.
To enable this setting you have to first of all Stop your running VM to get into the Configuration Editor ( select Edit Menu, Virtual Machine option. Once in the editor select Coherence in the Options on the left hand pane and you should see the options below
Todays Mac Fan Site
The UKMac fan site of the day is AppleAre.com. This is a nice Apple site with news and reviews of Apple Mac and other Apple products. It has a nice section for iPhone wallpapers ( which persumably will become iPod Touch/iPhone wallpapers in a couple of weeks time ) and also a collection of quotes from Steve Jobs which are well worth a read.
Recommended.
