Pownce is the latest brainchild of Kevin Rose founder of that other web phenomenon Digg.com. This time Kevin along with a few close friends ( Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen ) have set out to create their take on Social Networking web services and the result is a very slick site that allows friends to post comments, links, files and events to each other. Where Pownce has gone a step further is in their creation of a client side application which uses Adobes AIR ( Adobe Integrated Runtime ) platform to produce a small lightweight multi platform application ( well OSX and Windows at least for now ) which can be left running at all times. The Pownce client displays your latest messages and allows you to post new ones as well as send links, events and files to your friends ( max of 10Mb at present )
It is early days for this site and at present subscription is by invitation only but from what I can tell this looks like it could be a worthy adversary to MySpace, Twitter et al.
