Camino 1.5 Released today

CaminoThe latest major release of the popular browser Camino hit the web today. Camino is based on the Gecko rendering engine and is a popular alternative to Safari for Mac users.

One thing to be aware of that may catch you out as it did me is that some plugins that you may have installed can cause problems with this release. When I launched the new version my default page did not appear and it appeared as though either my Internet connection had failed or had gone very slow. Firing up Safari soon discounted this as the cause as pages continued to load as normal in that browser.

A quick search of the Camino forums revealed that the problem was most likely either the existing Camino profile or an out of date or incompatible plugin. The forums recommended checking the folder ~/Library/InputManagers for addins. When I did this I discovered a plugin called CaminoSession ( now unnecessary as 1.5 can restore sessions itself ). I removed this folder and Camino started up perfectly.

So far I haven’t spotted any hugely noticeable differences, the main ones are listed on the Features page and include such things as support for the built in OS X spellchecker in any form fields ( great news for bloggers ! ), improved support for RSS, built in Session Saver for restoring browser sessions and more.

If Camino was your preferred browser previously then this upgrade is a no brainer, for die hard Firefox fans the lack of support for Firefox plugins will probably not encourage them to make the change.
