Changing the Default Browser in Apple OS X

13 October 2006 3 Comments

Safari is an excellent browser, but many OS X users still prefer to change their default browser to Firefox, Opera, Camino etc. Unfortunately OS X still sees Safari as the default browser and any web links in emails etc will still launch Safari rather that the preferred browser.

To change this behaviour you have to go into Safari, select Preferences / General Tab and set the default browser there… After that any web links should launch in this browser rather than Safari…

One thing I’ve learned is that having a browser set to default that you don’t use is actually a good idea. On my PC, for example, I have IE set as default, but have blocked it from accessing the Internet.

The reason is simple: Pop-ups, maleware and scripts often try to open a new default browser window without your knowledge. As this is blocked, the risk of harm through malicious code is reduced.

Might be a good idea in OSX, too, if you don’t like Safari :)
